Not much to scribble on here tonight. The thing about major tournaments, and I will include –
1. FIFA World Cup
2. European Championships
3. Cricket World Cup
4. T20 World Cup
5. Indian Premier League
is that once they are underway, they do make for excellent entertainment for the evenings. The even better thing about them is that they all generally show up in successive years (of course the IPL is an annual competition). Hence, the European Championships in Poland & Ukraine have been occupying most of my evenings lately. I’m backing the fantastic German team to go on and win it, although defending champions Spain and France will surely have different ideas. Who are you supporting ?
2008 would probably be an year i’d remember more for the sporting entertainment it provided compared to anything to do with film and television. Here i list some of the best from the year-gone-by.

->Barack Obama as the American President.
->The LS polls- Responsible leaders.
->A job (hopefully).
->Improving ( 😛 ) my relationships with all ppl concerned
->A probable EPL title for Liverpool (Hate this,n it’ll prove to be wrong)
->No more terrorism.
->Lots of monies.
->The 6th Harry Potter movie.
->IPL-2, 2nd T20 WC, Aussies becoming the champions of nothing.
->My ‘first’ CAT
->Terminator: Salvation, Public Enemies.
->Slumdog millionaire bagging the Oscars.
I hope there’s a lot more great things we get to witness in 2009, hopefully they all turn to make up a happy year.
Here’s an interesting piece i came across
Ding dong, Chelsea’s streak is dead.
Chelsea’s last defeat at Stamford Bridge was in February 21, 2004 to Arsenal.
To put it in perspective, that’s six months before anyone knew what “Lost” was. In that time the Red Sox have won two World Series. It’s the same month Kanye West released his first album and since then has sold over 12 million units worldwide.
For more perspective, the previous English record had been 63 matches held set by Liverpool from 1978-80. Chelsea might be unlikeable, but they absolutely owned this record.
Its been a while since i last blogged, but it doesn’t seem as if many missed my views….
So anyways, moving on, what compels me to take the pains today, is the fact that this date (11/08/2008 ) will always be remembered for a very special moment, in my country’s history.
I also remember the date because i lost a loved one, on this very date, 11 years ago.
The glitter of GOLD is not new to Indians, famous for their explicit gold ornaments, and traditional gold based jewelery. But, GOLD associated with sport has been a rarity, that still continues to amaze the +1bn brain exercising Indians.
Why aren’t we so adept at the skill of finishing tops, when it comes to sport?
The primary reason I see, would probably not be the lack of infrastructure, and neither will it be shortage of funds ( though it would be the favorite nominee for secondary reason ), but rather the indifference towards sports. Its more in the mindset of Indians, to be academic, rather than athletic. Hence we may produce some of the most intelligent scientists, the most successful businessmen, the most efficient of economists, and even the best Grand Masters ( chess ), but not world-beating cross-country runners.
Do I see this as a failure on our part?
No, definitely not, we are aces when it comes to the games of the mind ( not necessarily mind games )
, we are the Gold’s there, and that’s what counts, to be among the best, where you thrive to be the best.
So what makes today so remarkable for this nation?
That man ABHINAV BINDRA! I must confess I knew very little of this champion, before 10.30 am today, and still don’t know much of his past exploits..but he’ll always be remembered for what he accomplished today.
He reached heights, no Indian, male or female, had reached before, HE WROTE HIS NAME IN GOLD.
He became the first ever individual Olympic Gold medalist for India, by clinching gold in the 10m Air Rifle event at Beijing. What he has achieved will not be completely justified by my words, & hence I wouldn’t divulge too much into singing laurels.
All I can say is: I SALUTE U ABHINAV, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, U MAKE ME PROUD, U MAKE INDIA PROUD.
In India, where football viewership is concerned all we know ov r the Englishmen??
So some ov my friends (lesser proficient wid all the game’s happenings) enquired about their absence from the on-goings in Austria-Switzerland….
Well here’s hw i replied:
As 4 de English team…….bakwaaaaaaaaas!
They have sum ov the gr8st players??? Who-the Cheque books playing in the EPL??
Probably only Rooney (wud recv 1 red card in every tourn.), Gerrard, Terry n Ferdinand (on sum days) r the sumwhat decent players they’ve gt…..otherwise
Michael Owen(is he injured??)
Joe Cole(keep doin the show)
Beckham(set pcs., else posin 4 da cams by the sidelines)
Ashley Cole( o Cheryl, were r u??)
endless list….(don’t even talk of the goalkeepers)….
they wunt have made to the knockouts frm any ov the grps, Austria wud’ve defeated them…..only teams they cud’ve beaten wud be….Greece, Swiss, Czech(maybe,on their best day), India if they cud get a Euro membership….lolzzz
Holland deserved to win the European cup-umm yes,maybe,seein de way they played in the grp stages……..
bt lukin at the way they played against Hiddinks czars,its onlyrite dat they’re outie………
Worst ov all,sneijder(1 ov my 3 oranje favs along wid robben n van persie) disappointed me the most,always lookin 2 shoot from range n employing a very selfish game,clearly the russians had a lot more d-penetrations n created a lot more dangerous situations(notably 5-6 empty front ov the goal crosses,ov wich 2 were converted)……
n dat boy Arshavin (no wonder Zenit wr UEFA cup winners)…..stunning!!
As i’d prediceted in an earlier post on another site,never forget bigg guus…..
so i’d luk out 4 da russians if i wr spain altho guus never goes past the semis….
Earlier post 4 every1s viewing:
Who will win Euro-08
I hope its either Holland or Germany altho the top seeds to win would be:
1-Portugal(Team to beat in the tournament,Ronaldo) n Germany(Probably better than Portugal one on one,bt consistency against other teams will be tested)
2-Italy(Very strong on most days,bt lack a clear goal scoring striker)
3-Spain(Trinity of Torres,Fabregas,Villa shud come good)
4-France(Mix of age nd youth bt in their first major tounament post Zidane)
5-Holland(Flair nd attack,bt infighting nd star status lets ’em down,difficult group)
6-Czech(Weak in attack w/o Rosicky,solid defensive mentality)
7-Russia(Never forget Big Guus)
8-Greece(defending champions,considered outsiders,bt the only team to remain unbeaten in qualifiers)
Of the others, Sweden,Croatia, n Turkey r strong nd may cause upsets on their day,bt winning wud be a far shot….
As for the Germans i still back them n feel they hv the easiest route to the final (the Turks fite bt r left wid 2 few a warriors…..), n u cn never kno wot happens then (hope its nt a lame duck as the WC-06 final,decided on penalties,no more penalties 4 me plzzzz(zzz,o i’m nt sleeping already)…..
Yes, i’m back at home(this time i’ve gt time too), n i’m loving every moment of it. I had a torrid time coming bk, my tickets didn’t get confirmed, n so i had to shift births at nite…bt dats another story n i’ve gt better things to discuss.
Before coming bk i counted hw many Chelsea matches,i’d be able to watch live at home…n the no. came to a mouth-watering 7.And this weekend probably brings the best prospects.
On sunday, december 16 2007, Chelsea make a trip across London to the Emirates Stadium, while Liverfool(ooPs) host Man Utd. Now dats quite a lineup of matches all within 5 hrs.
In a way ,I don’t actually think these matches will go a long way in deciding the outcome of a season, which has seen no real clean dominance by any team in particular.W hat i think will decide the season is how the teams fair against other teams outside the so called ‘Premier 4’ of the premiership.But wins matter so much, especially in a season where the final outcome may be a matter of a couple of points.
Arsenal come from a reassuring victory against the meagre Steaua Bucharest, after a string of grim results marred, what has been a briiliant start to their season.Last weeks defeat at Middlesborough could, although mean that they may as well finish the week at third position in the worst case.But the quality dat Arsene Wenger always produces in his youngsters,sometimes close to flawless, makes it appear that whoever wears the Arsenal colors tries to run the Arsenal magic wagon.
Chelsea have been revived under ‘yes/no’Avram, but they still play very much in the way they used to play.Their 16 match unbeaten run in all competitions has been full of gut and courage,bt not exactly the flair n style (except on a few select instances,when the defences hv been lyk open gates,the other side of Manchester understands) dat ws promised wen Jose walked out.They still play in the mean Chelsea way,n dats wat works for them. Bt their biggest worry travelling to the Emirates will be the absence of Didier Drogba. They played w/o Drogba in midweek, and carved a woeful Valencia defence as they wanted, bt couldn’t score. And with the African Nations Cup coming up,it seems they’ll hv to makedo w/o Kalou,Essien,and Mikel too. I hope Roman has some spare Roubles to see them out of dat problem,come January.
Man Utd are truly the form team in the premiership and score heavily whenever they do.The likes of Tavez and Nani have settled in well and finding the goal doesn’t seem difficult.Their only problem is when they hv off days,days wen u can tell from the beginning dat the flair isn’t their.Against Liverpool they’ll hv to work extremely hard to win,tho Liverpool do settle for draws easily. The Anfield crowd won’t help things as well,n they’ll have to rely heavily on the likes of Ronaldo,Giggs,Rooney and Tavez to provide that extra bit.
Liverpool aren’t my personal favourites(i hate the club),but i write unbiased.They come into this match having a string of brilliant as well as forgettable results.They have the tendency to produce their best,when they’re facing the worst, n it makes them give memorable performances,bt only after they lose the actual bigger picture of dominance.Their win against Marseille ws another example of this.They had to win ,n dats wen they did it.When they aren’t motivated enough they generally tend to settle for draws.But their faithfullia has supported them whole-heartedly,happen what may.Man Utd at home maybe good enough for a draw,but i don’t know if they have it in them to beat Sir Alex’s men.
It’s going to be a fantastic 5 hours,n make sure u catch the action livde wherever you are……
